Rock Salt is often used to grit over ice and, to a lesser extent, shallow layers of snow. It can help to stop snow settling but works better after snow and ice has been cleared. This prevent paths, roads, driveways and steps from icing over. It works by creating the salty, watery solution – brine, which has a lower freezing point to normal water.
